Why Technical Indicators Matter

Technical indicators are mathematical calculations based on price, volume, or open interest. They help traders identify trends, momentum, volatility, and potential reversal points. In this guide, we'll cover three of the most popular and effective indicators.

Moving Averages (MA)

Moving averages smooth out price data to reveal the underlying trend. The two most common types are:

  • SMA (Simple Moving Average): Average of closing prices over a set period
  • EMA (Exponential Moving Average): Weights recent prices more heavily, responding faster to changes

How to Use Moving Averages

Common strategies include:

  • Price above MA = uptrend, below = downtrend
  • Golden cross (50-day crosses above 200-day) = bullish signal
  • Death cross (50-day crosses below 200-day) = bearish signal
  • MA as dynamic support/resistance

RSI (Relative Strength Index)

RSI is a momentum oscillator that measures the speed and change of price movements. It ranges from 0 to 100, with readings above 70 typically considered overbought and below 30 oversold.

RSI Trading Strategies

  • Buy when RSI crosses above 30 (exiting oversold)
  • Sell when RSI crosses below 70 (exiting overbought)
  • Divergence: price makes higher high but RSI makes lower high = potential reversal

MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence)

MACD shows the relationship between two EMAs (typically 12 and 26 period). It consists of:

  • MACD line: 12 EMA minus 26 EMA
  • Signal line: 9 EMA of MACD line
  • Histogram: MACD minus signal line

MACD Trading Signals

  • MACD crosses above signal = bullish
  • MACD crosses below signal = bearish
  • Histogram expanding = momentum strengthening

Combining Indicators

No single indicator is perfect. Combine them for confirmation: use MAs for trend direction, RSI for momentum, and MACD for entry timing. When all three align, you have a high-probability setup.
